CIRCULAR ECONOMY WORKSHOPS

Hosted at JKUAT UNIVERSITY - KENYA

Kenya’s biggest landfill is but a short distance from the United Nations complex in Nairobi where talks on a global plastics treaty are taking place this week. There is much news about the planetary crisis stemming from global warming, waste pollution, and poisoned ecosystems. However, in every problem there is an opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and reconnect with Mother Nature to find insight on making sure nothing goes to waste.  Paragon Institute of Innovation is on a mission to infuse hope and inspiration into the next stewards of this planet.  In collaboration with Eddy Gitonga, Founder & CEO of Eden Ecotech Global, a Kenyan innovation company that creates T-Bins (recycling bins that are solar powered and provide free wifi to nearby users ) - Paragon and Eddy will be coordinating a series of hackathons and workshops throughout Kenya. We aim to utilize this partnership to expand educational opportunities for the local communities by exposing them to emerging technologies in the Green Sector, inspiring awareness and participation from local beneficiaries, and establishing a job training infrastructure for the collection and conversion of waste materials into viable products for the economy.  We have landfills of proof that the linear system of take-make-waste economies are killing our planet in every way. However, circular economy models have the capacity to put our civilization back on track with nature - because nature itself is circular.

Ultimately, these workshops are designed to help shift attitudes towards waste materials, and inspire fresh perspectives on innovating new ways of repurposing waste materials - be it plastic, e-waste, or furniture. These workshops will educate, cultivate, and invigorate the people of Kenya by teaching them ways to sort materials in order to utilize in the sustainable production of new goods. By teaching the community how to reduce landfill waste and environmental pollution, not only will they be able to take a more active role in the environmental health of their neighborhood, but will also be empowered with the necessary infrastructure to ensure a cleaner future for generations to come.

Resonating with nature’s circularity will be one of the most effective ways to end the triple planetary crisis and allow humanity to thrive for centuries to come.  Between Paragon Institute of Innovation and Eden Ecotech Global, we share a mission to catapult sustainable practices to new heights and enable greater and greener solutions for both the people and the planet.

FUN FACTS

  • Circularity could reduce the annual volume of plastics entering our oceans by over 80%

  • In buildings and construction, improved recycling in the G7 could save an extra 14-18% of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Circularity has the ability to ignite whole new markets as plastic waste becomes a resource that helps close the loop, putting material back into the system of production, and making it a more central element in both multilateral negotiations and regional processes.
